Bloomfield Man Gets 35 Years For Murder Of Gas Station Attendant: Prosecutors

A 36-year-old Bloomfield man was sentenced to 35 years in state prison on Tuesday, Feb. 6 after being convicted of murdering Jahque Benbow, a 23-year-old gas station attendant in May 2022, prosecutors announced.

Lamar Sommers, along with two other men, conspired to shoot Benbow at the Irvington gas station where he worked, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said. 

Sommers waited in the car while the two men shot Benbow five times, Stephens said. Sommers was apprehended in North Carolina a month later, Stephens said.

Aside from murder, Sommers was also convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and two weapons charges, Stephens, II said
